But there's also a lot of instances where changes to the source ruin things, as there are instances of great works making their sources unrecognizable due to changes. When it comes to books or comics or other sources, whenever I see "the original story was different" I don't really know what to think because most of the times it's used by fans to just go on and on about their knowledge of the material instead of making a critique on the movie based (not traced) on that material. Herzog comes to mind in how he manipulates reality in his documentaries, but all done while serving a purpose, and I can understand why some of his lies are "necessary". Sometimes, the manipulation is just condescending, and for instance, I can't reconcile those cases. Sometimes, the manipulation is indeed better, and you can reconcile that. If that impact is lost, then there's a mental backlash because we feel lied to, because reality was a different story and it was manipulated to be "better". On the one hand, it shouldn't matter, since you're watching a movie anyways, if the story is good, it being fake doesn't make it worse, it just makes it not real (which most great stories aren't). In the case of "based on a true story" stories: I think inaccuracy in a film is a weird area.
